If you know someone that likes plays a musical instrument then what better gift could you give them than a saxophone necklace or guitar necklace. Made out of sterling silver they will really appreciate the time and care that has gone into making this quality piece of silver jewellery.
Silver has been known since ancient times and has long been valued as a precious metal, used to make ornaments, jewellery, high-value tableware and utensils and currency coins. Mined right back in 4000BC in Turkey which was then called Anatolia, the main source of silver now is from Peru and Mexico. To the Egyptians, gold was considered to be the perfect metal, and gave the symbol of a circle to it. Since silver was the next best to gold in terms of perfection, it was given a semi-circle for it’s symbol. This semi-circle later changed through time and led to a moon symbol, due to the similarity between the shining metal being like the glowing moon light. The Romans gave silver the name of argentum, which is still used today as the international name of the element, from where its chemical symbol of Ag comes from.
Commercial-grade fine silver is at least 99.9% pure silver, and purities greater than 99.999% are available. In silver jewellery a purity of 92.5% is used as above this and the silver jewellery becomes too soft and would not withstand everyday wear. This is where the term 925 silver comes from representing 925 parts silver out of 1000 with the other 7.5% traditionally made from copper. Silver is also mixed with gold to make white gold and is recently becoming more popular.

Learning A Musical Instrument – What’s The Right Amount Of Time To Practice
Posted: Jan 16, 2011 |Comments: 0

Over the years many students have asked me “how much time should I practice each day”? The question is a good one, but unfortunately there’s no one good answer. The only way to answer that question is to understand the student and the particular goals at that time. This article will delve into the various thoughts behind practice time and how you might determine what is best.
Many people take a somewhat haphazard approach towards their practice sessions; possibly because they do not have clearcut goals for themselves. First of all, it’s a good idea to develop a routine for your practice sessions. The session should be broken up into segments covering various aspects of musicianship. For instance, time should be devoted to scales, etudes, exercises, songs, and free play. You should try to fit all aspects of play onto a practice session, so, if you have four aspects, you can divide your session equally into four parts, say 10 minutes or 15 minutes each. Of course these times can be adjusted according to need. If you have a recital coming up you may spend more time on your songs to perform than etudes in the week prior, and, you may increase the session time up a bit as well.
For younger players who are stark beginners, a minimum amount of time would be 20 to 30 minutes, four or five times a week. This would be acceptable if you expect to see moderate progress. Now, add in the element of goals and this could be altered by more or less time depending on the circumstances. If a youngster’s life if filled with other activities this would indicate that the instrument was not necessarily the first priority. As such, the average time indicated would be reasonable and realistic. If there were no other activities in the student’s life other than schoolwork, then the indicated amount of time could be increased.
An adult student should be able to commit more time to a daily practice session. First of all, they normally have a greater level of concentration and discipline. Additionally, the ability to schedule daily activities is more developed. Although an adult might be expected to practice for longer periods of time, the number of times per week may be the same. Again, the role of individual goals figures into the equation. If they desire to progress quickly and perform more advanced music, then it would be necessary to commit to a more rigorous practice schedule.
One more factor is considered when determining appropriate practice time, and that is the type of instruction that the individual student is receiving. If a person is taking private lessons, it would be reasonable to commit more time in order to get the most from the financial investment. If they are self taught, then there may be a bit more forgiveness to the expectations.
When it comes to the concept of how much practice time is needed to master a musical instrument, you can always remember that “you can never practice too much; practice makes perfect!”

If done right, the piano can provide a lifetime of fun, enjoyment, and musical stimulation for the whole family. If done wrong, frustration and problems can persist for years. Before you buy a piano, a little pre-planning is important. The first thing you need to do is to determine your musical needs and furniture requirements for the home. A piano is not just a musical instrument; it can also be the centerpiece of a room. It adds sophistication, elegance, and beauty to even the dullest room. But even more than that, it can be the tool that helps you achieve your dreams.
Browse Piano Shops in Sydney
The best way to find the right instrument is to browse the local piano shops in Sydney. Look for a dealer that has an extensive collection of new, used, and refurbished pianos in all price levels. It is critical for you to examine the different varieties of pianos in the market. If the piano shops have certain regulations about using the pianos for sale, ask the salesperson to demonstrate the types of pianos available in the shop. When playing the piano, test the responsiveness of each keyboard. Also, listen carefully to each and every piano you are interested in. This will let you know which instrument would best suit your musical sensibilities. Visiting piano shops in Sydney has an added benefit of letting you see different styles and finishes of the instruments. This enables you to know which one will be the most attractive in your home.
Should You Buy from a Dealer or an Individual?
There is a difference between buying from reputable piano shops in Sydney and buying from a private person. For example, dealers typically provide a manufacturer warranty for their items, complimentary services, and a better variety of choices. Even used pianos that are bought from the dealer are covered with warranty from the piano shops in Sydney so there is less cause for concern. In addition, a lot of dealers today offer a trade-up policy wherein you can enjoy the full-purchase price of your old piano in case you desire to have a higher-end piano for a specific timeframe.Despite these benefits, some buyers still prefer to buy from private individuals because it is typically cheaper than retail. However, it is also essential to remember that you will shoulder a lot of responsibilities in this option. For example, you need to travel to several homes and there is no assurance that you’ll find the right piano.
Expect to pay for the moving cost of transporting the piano as well. Since there is no warranty, you may end up spending more if the piano you bought turns out to be defective. Overall, there are a lot of drawbacks associated with buying from private individuals; it is not surprising that most people typically prefer to buy their instruments from reputable piano shops in Sydney.

Playing A Stringed Musical Instrument

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Playing A Stringed Musical Instrument
Nothing is as beautiful as the sound of a nicely played violin. I find that this is the most pleasing string musical instrument for my tastes. The notes appear to cry and nearly talk to me when a violinist plays a beautiful piece. I can’t help thinking about the classic comedy Young Frankenstein whenever I hear this actual stringed musical instrument.
What makes these instruments so amazing is that every one is a one off.
The guitar appeals to the yonger musicians. Many of us love the sound of the electric guitar because there is such power and emotion behind the notes. A really good guitarist is one of the most exciting individuals you would hope to ever meet. This stringed musical instrument is certain to be around for a considerable time to come.
The guitar seemed to reverberate a spell on the fans that can still be heard today.
Ironically, my favorite Stevie Ray Vaughn song is Life by the Drop. There is something haunting about the tune and something moving about the words.
The acoustic guitar produces a totally different sound than its electrical counterpart. However , I find that the acoustic song is the most appealing although I could be a giant fan of Stevie Ray Vaughn’s mastery of the electrical guitar.
A banjo can express an off-the-cuff easy going feel although Joe Brown’s heart rending version of “I’ll see you in my dreams” at the memorial concert for George Harrison still brings tears to my eyes. Naturally, there is always the heavy, deep sound of the bass too.
I love all of these great producers of tunes but none can touch the endearing violin. The violin remains my favourite stringed instrument. I only wish that I had a chance to hear Stevie Ray Vaughn play the violin. I know that he’d have done a magnificent job.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Piano Music for Children, A Special Instrument
The melody of music has the power to touch every soul, including children. Their joy for music is evident from the smile that inadvertently comes to their face while listening to melodious music. Though there are several musical instruments that elevate kid’s excitement, piano music for children is something that never fails to elate them boundlessly. There are several kids music CDs with piano melodies that blend favorite songs of the season with classic nursery rhymes. The soaring sales of these musical CDs pay testimony to the growing popularity of piano music amongst the younger lots.
Why is Piano the most Preferred Choice?
There are innumerable musical instruments like guitar, piano, violin, flute and many more, each producing different ranges of musical tones. Amongst these instruments piano is the world’s best-known, widely used and also most loved musical instrument. This is because an acoustic 88-key piano features the broadest array of musical tones that no other musical instrument has. Hence, this allows children to learn to produce wide variety of rhythmic tones and also to experiment with different piano notes.
Importance Of Piano Music For Children
The soothing sound of an acoustic piano is often preferred by adults for relaxing and expressing emotions. These music tones are also said to be beneficial for kids. There are several studies suggesting that young children can enjoy lifetime benefits from early exposure to piano music and other music lessons.
Some pediatric researches have proved that when kids begin to learn piano or other similar musical instrument, certain areas of their brains that control the fine motor skills, memory and speech get stimulated which is good for their over all development. As per other researchers, some other benefits that children may derive from playing piano and getting actively involved in musical lessons are experiencing enhanced self-esteem, accomplishment and becoming more disciplined and creative. Hence, lessons on piano music for children are highly recommended.
How Learning to Play Piano Affects Children?
Now that you already know there are numerous benefits of learning to play piano, would you not like to know how piano music for children infuse positive qualities in them? Well, learning to play piano requires a child to read music notation and then interpret the correct keys to play on the piano keyboard. This demands concentration and good eye-to-hand coordination. The music notation also requires them to determine how long the notes must be played, how many beats are their in a measure and so on.
These types of mental exercises develop their practical and logical thinking, thereby strengthening their practical subjects like math and science. Moreover, since they need to practice the notations regularly they also get exposed to the process of learning.
Piano Music For Children -The Right Lesson To Begin With
Understanding the positive impacts of musical instruments on children, the parents are advised to send their kids for music lessons, especially piano music or buy them kids music CDs of piano melodies. The special mention of piano is important because this instrument not only offers broad range of musical tones as discussed earlier but also is the most loved musical instrument in the kid’s world.
The sounds emitted from piano are so soothing and gentle that it immediately strikes chord with the small children. They like the soft and sweet piano tunes and hence feel motivated to play the notes themselves. Piano music classes for your children can be a good beginning and learning experience for them. They will train them to enjoy their learning sessions which may get carried forward to their school lives, thereby helping them in their studies.

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – Can You Really Learn To Play a Musical Instrument From an Online Course?
Out of the 250 million people in the United States, about 25 million of them play an instrument of some kind, or used to when they were in school and would like to pick up where they left off. Another 30 million or so sing in a church choir, a barbershop quartet, or at the very least, in the shower.
That means that there are over 50 million adults who would like to play their instrument or sing better than they do now. After all, everyone wants to improve his or her skills, no matter what the field.
Before the advent of the Internet, if adults wanted to learn to play a musical instrument, they had to schedule a lesson time with a teacher in a store or studio or if they were fortunate, in their own home with a teacher who would come each week for a lesson.
That meant doing it after work, driving to a store or studio, dealing with transportation, babysitting, illness, cancellations, and so on. Very few adults who started lessons that way continued very long, as it was a continual hassle.
But with the development of the World Wide Web, music teachers have gone online to offer lessons to adults in the comfort and convenience of their own homes. No scheduling problems, no transportation issues, no cancellations; none of the problems inherent in traditional lessons.
Here are a few of the many courses available for adults online:

Article Source: http://www.articlesbase.com/ – How to buy a good string instrument for your child
ZING! Go the strings of my tot or
You (or your child) have decided that they could benefit from learning to play violin, viola, cello or string bass. Congratulations, and we welcome you to an exciting and rewarding world of music making.
One of the first questions that may immediately come to mind as you begin this journey is “Where do I get a quality instrument?” Finding a first instrument that is responsive and has a beautiful sound is a critical first step when learning to play a string instrument. This is especially true when procuring an instrument for a child. Here are a couple of guidelines:
1) Find a reputable string instrument dealer. If you walk in the door of the shop and see flutes, drums or trumpets, immediately turn and leave. String instruments are a specialty item and if a store offers a variety of instruments, that often means they are less likely to provide the string specialists that you will find in shops that exclusively deal in string instruments.
2) If your child is first starting with a private teacher, consult with the teacher before making any commitment. Most string teachers have established relationships with string instrument dealers. These dealers know the teacher’s preferences in terms of shoulder rests, strings and instrument brand. Since the teacher probably sends significant business to a particular shop, you are also more likely to get “priority” service. Every teacher has slightly different preferences when it comes to how an instrument‘s tone quality and how it is “set up” (chin rest, shoulder rest, type of strings, etc.) A store that consistently deals with a teacher will have this information and can therefore provide an instrument to the particular teacher’s exact specifications. It is important to remember that string instruments come in a variety of sizes and young children need to be “sized” for an instrument. It is very frustrating for a child to try to learn to play an instrument that is too large for them. Matching the size to the player is a determination best made by a string specialist. Ask the person with whom you are interacting at the string shop whether or not they are a professional string player themselves. (Based on their response, your common sense should kick in about what to do next.)
If your child is beginning in a school program, ask the school’s string teacher. Most string teachers will hand out a list of recommended shops. Keep in mind, however, that they are often obligated to give you the names of all shops, even those that might not provide the best service, instruments and experts. Instead, ask the teacher where they take their instrument when it needs to be worked on or from whom they purchased their instrument.
3) Stay off the Internet. Yes, it is tempting when you see those rock bottom prices for violins from China, but unfortunately the quality is often very poor and many of the instruments virtually unplayable. I have actually seen instruments that could not even be tuned because the quality was so poor. You will also be stuck with the instrument for life, because few decent string shops will take these instruments in on trade. Also, shops like to deal in their own “brands” and usually won’t take other brands in on trade. Don’t let price be the determining factor when selecting an instrument. You will not have “saved” any money if the child is frustrated and quits because of trying to play an inferior instrument. As by way of analogy, consider the quality of and the money you spend on sports equipment
4) Ask the following questions of the sales person before signing on the dotted line:
How much is the most expensive violin, viola, cello, bass in your store? The higher the figure, the better. First, it likely gives a more accurate snapshot of the overall quality of the shop. It may indicate they take this business seriously, and are willing to invest and maintain an expensive, high end inventory are prepared to be around for the long run—for themselves and your child. Consider too, that with good instruction, your child might really get into this, and it is not uncommon for parents to pay ,000 for a violin (even more for a cello) for an advanced teen. That may seem inconceivable now, but music can change children for the better. It opens doors in life that you have not even considered. Cross that bridge when you get to it, but know that there are options should that point in time come, and you would be making an investment in your child—and the instrument. So, plan to plan ahead a bit. Their involvement may lead to wonderful and creative things. It does every day.
This leads to the next question:
What is your trade in policy? Remember, most children are not starting on full sized instruments, so as they grow you are going to need to have instruments that grow with them.
Renting vs. Purchasing: If you are with a good shop, then this question simply comes down to your personal cash flow. Many shops will credit your rental payments up to a certain amount and then apply it towards your eventual purchase.
Used vs. New: Believe it or not, used is often better. Remember the great Italian instruments are hundreds of years old and therefore “used.” As long as the instrument is in good condition (no cracks, open seams or disfiguration), old and used are fine.
Insurance: Many shops will offer “instrument” insurance. You should check with your homeowners insurance agent and be absolutely certain that an instrument is covered under your policy. If there is any question, take the shop up on the instrument insurance offer, especially for cellos. A child who can leave his or her lunch on the bus can do the same with a musical instrument. There is also the risk of the instrument being damaged if it is dropped or bumped into.
Carbon Fiber vs. Wood Bows: Strongly consider carbon bows for kids. The bows are less fragile and usually much more “stable” and “even” the than wood bows that can often cost twice as much. Plus, the kids love the colors of the carbon bows and may become much more engaged just because their bow is purple or red. Give the child some say on the color selection, it will give them a greater appreciation of their tools of the trade.
This may become something of a hobby for your child or their life’s avocation. Music has the power to change lives, and by investing in a quality instrument from the start, you send a message that this is an endeavor to be taken seriously.

It is a well acknowledged fact that the first 7 years of a child’s existence are the most important years during which all of their traits, mannerisms, skills along with personality will be formed during this crucial time. Their learning curve, in a way of speaking, is large and flexible and their brains are reminiscent of sponges, soaking in, consuming, digesting and processing everything that is going on all-around them to sculpt the personality that they will one day become.
