Playing Jazz Guitar
Posted: Apr 29, 2006 |Comments: 0

When a person knows the basics of playing the guitar, it is quite easy to play music from various genres. Many people start in one genre before moving on to another. A good example is Bach who composed classical music the traditional way then later improvised it creating something unique for the audience to appreciate.
Playing guitar jazz is also like that. It can be improvised and/or combined with other musical genres. By listening to the notes and a little practice, the people who hear it will simply love it.
The same thing can happen when playing the guitar. A person can start by learning a certain song the way is it commonly played; then when he understands the rhythm he can determine where slight changes can be made, how it can be refined and/or turned into a jazz rendition.
Jazz music is made up of 4 beats to a measure. This is called syncopation which is very different from classical music that is made up of half beats. By learning how to play each of these notes and with a lot of practice, you will be able to get used to the rhythm.
Jazz guitars are different from traditional guitars because the wood used is a lighter material and the strings are set much lower making it faster to play. For the person to play like other guitarists, it is advisable to buy the right guitar for the part.
Another way of learning how to play jazz is by listening to some of the greatest jazz musicians. Some of the best are Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong and David Benoit. By buying the albums and listening to how each of these people play and sing, you will get into the rhythm and be playing like the experts in a short time.
Since the music is quite different, practicing the various notes will help. One can start with a C note. This should be done repeatedly while the left hand is moving on the chromatic scale. For a better feel, the E flat can be added until one has reached the blue scale.
Learning how to play jazz music will take some time. The important thing to make it successful is being able to hear each part of the song. If a person is serious about switching genre’s, then he must devote a lot of time and effort to get it right.

Jazz Bass Guitar Rhythm
Jazz Bass Guitar Rhythm
There is also less emphasis placed on harmonic in its tone as well, which is why it is selected to be used in the majority of most three piece bands. Fender introduced the J Bass guitar in 1960 thinking that the name would appeal to mainly the jazz musicians and encourage more bass players to switch to jazz music.
Normally the bass guitar jazz body was created from either Alder or Ash, while Maple was used to create the neck. Between the years of 1989 and 1992 the American Standard Jazz Bass was produced, which had a much larger body and neck that curved. The bass guitar jazz is ideal for either those individuals who enjoy finger playing or slap playing.
The reason for this is because a bass guitar jazz is equipped with two individual pickup along its neck at different places, which serves different purposes. The first pickup, which is known as the bridge pickup, gives more of a treble tone. The second pickup, which is located in the neck, gives more of a rounded sound.
With these two pickups the bass guitar jazz player has the ability to combine both pickups and create a unique sound. In fact, there is a much larger variety of sound that the bass guitar jazz player can produce having both of these pickups. These will enable the bass guitar player to produce a much more melodic sound.
The first three knob jazz guitar was introduced onto the market in 1961. Two of the knobs were used for volume control, while the other was used to control the overall tone. Not much more changed on the bass guitar jazz until 2003 when a push button control was made available, which allowed the bass guitar player to switch between pickups.
In 2008 the American Standard Guitar came out with a model that resembled the ones that were produced in 1994. They had the same type of neck with rounded shapes and a round body radius, which were designed by John Sohr. They had two bipolar single pickups as well as black control knobs, which really stood out.
They became extremely popular with their bright paint jobs and the smooth sound that they could produce. The bass guitar jazz was once again moving back into popularity with many bass guitar musicians, who were coming to love the smooth rhythms that it could produce as their fingers gracefully flowed across the strings.
Or Keynan is professional bass player that plays over 7 years. He owns and maintains Beginner-Bass-Guitar.com, a great recourse that teach Jazz Bass Guitar Rhythm

Online jazz guitar lessons ? So where can you find these types of guitar lessons?
Online jazz guitar lessons ? So where can you find these types of guitar lessons?
Jazz music has had such an influence in the world since the beginning of the early 20th century. Jazz music is also uniquely American with its roots traced to the Deep South. Have you always wanted to learn how to play an instrument like the guitar in the jazz style? Online jazz guitar lessons are quickly becoming the best way in learning how to play the instrument. With the explosion of the Internet the question becomes which online sites are legit, and which are fraudulent?
Jazz music is such a different style than many other forms – Classical, rock, folk, heavy metal, Spanish, or country. One of the unique things about jazz is for the musician to be able to improvise off of a theme freely within the structure of a composition. Regarding Classical music, most educated historians consider Beethoven, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky to be absolute geniuses through their beloved works that they each composed during their lifetimes. When world-renowned orchestras, (the Vienna Symphony Orchestra or the New York Philharmonic) perform works by Beethoven or Tchaikovsky in concerts they do not improvise off of the written piece of music composed by these masters. The members of the orchestra play what is written on the music staves on each of their instruments. The conductor may choose to interpret the music differently by changing the tempo slightly, for example. But, specifically the conductor would never choose to improvise on Beethoven’s famous 5th symphony; adding entire passages that were not originally composed in the score. I would guarantee that the conductor of such a symphony would face the wrath and scorn of music critics, as well as the patrons in attendance at such a performance.
Jazz is different from other forms because of the fact that free improvisation is at the very root of this style of music. Improvisation is something that an artist must be taught, and then learn to build on the principles in freely creating music based off of a simple theme within a composition. The great thing about improvisation is that no two interpretations off of a theme need to be exactly alike. The truly outstanding jazz musicians are able to improvise while they are performing; and without a single note written on the music staff, (or in guitar the tablature) specifying the improvisation.
Are you psyched about learning how to play jazz guitar? The question then becomes the following: Where would you seek to find the best type of instruction online in this style of guitar? Instrumental music instruction is now readily available on the Internet. The one thing that you must understand is what to look for in finding a suitable program, one that would be in your best interests in learning how to play jazz guitar.
A legitimate site will clearly state the exact type of lessons that are available for prospective students. You would not want to pay money into a program that specializes in rock or heavy metal guitar, as example. While visiting the site, pay particular attention to the testimonials and reviews from students who have successfully learned how to play the guitar. Are there any positive reviews posted from students who were taught jazz guitar?
Next, focus in on the instructors who work at the site. Are any of them proficient at playing jazz guitar? Do these instructors hold certification in teaching instruments; as well as the theory of music? In order to learn jazz guitar, you would have to learn some basic music theory. Not every guitar player is able to verbally articulate and communicate in a manner making it easy for a student to understand what is being taught in the lessons. Pay attention to the fact that the instructors are actually qualified and certified teachers!
How does the online program offer lessons? Are you able to download the tutorials right to your computer? Is there an alternative option available in which you could purchase lessons on DVD and have them shipped to your home? How much does the site charge monthly for the lesson tutorials? The recommended cost/month for lessons should be around -40. Be leery of a site that has monthly charges that are significantly different from this set industry cost. If a site boasts that it would “only” cost for the monthly lessons, then I would have serious questions as to the actual validity of the tutorials. Conversely, if a site is going to charge you .95 per month, then what else comes with this high package cost?
Online jazz guitar lessons offer opportunities that were not available even 10 years ago. You do need to do your homework, however, in finding a suitable online program that provides lesson on jazz guitar. There is a site that has successfully taught students from all over the world on how to play the guitar, including in the style of jazz. For more information, please visit this site: http://theplayguitarlessons.info.

Play Jazz Guitar
Play Jazz Guitar
Jazz guitar music is based on various guitarists’ attempts to experiment with the form used to express musical ideas. Jazz began with the African slaves combining the song and dance forms they found in America with the musical traditions they carried with them from their homeland. Since then jazz musicians of every nationality have developed certain methods of taking a musical idiom and turning it into jazz by interpreting the music using jazz chord substitution and improvising techniques.
The trademark of the jazz guitar player is that he is inventing new music all the time. When people learn to play musical instruments it is usually with the aim of playing the songs or instrumentals of a famous musician. In jazz the aim is to build new music using other musical genres or the works of composers from outside jazz. A jazz guitarist with a number of years’ experience will have developed his own ways of improvising over a song or instrumental piece. Quite often his improvisation will be based on the techniques of using the notes in the chord he is playing to provide the material for his solo, or to simply use the notes he finds in the melody.
Whichever approach the jazz guitar player uses he will always depart from the melodic structure of the musical work he is improvising over and use melodic figures or “licks” which he has made up or learned from other guitarists. A lick is a combination of notes which can be used in improvising over music in any key. A lick is like a very short tune or fraction of a melody. Listen carefully to a jazz guitar solo. Try imitating some of the licks that you hear. You do not need to play them exactly, just imitate them and see how they fit with other licks to carry the solo to its ending.
Other jazz guitar techniques are the substitution of chords using other chords with more interest or color, the use of walking bass to add interest or changing the rhythm of a song. You can find examples of all these jazz guitar techniques by listening to the music of jazz guitar players like Charlie Christian, one of the pioneers of jazz guitar, Charlie Byrd, an exponent of latin jazz guitar who developed a genre of his own using classical guitar techniques to play jazz, or Wes Montgomery, a guitar player who ventured into many fields of music.
Anybody wanting to learn to play jazz guitar will be wondering what guitars give you that distinctive jazz sound. Of course you can play jazz on any guitar but when musicians think of a “jazz guitar” they usually have in mind a guitar with “f” holes in the body, an arched top and a piezoelectric pickup. This gives that warm, expressive jazz feel that people associate with jazz guitar and is expressed so well in the work of Wes Montgomery. Epiphone is the brand name most jazz fans associate with this kind of guitar but they are also made by D’Angelico, Gibson and others.
To learn to play jazz guitar, even in a comparatively superficial sense entails listening to alot of jazz guitar music. As you listen you need to analyze what jazz guitarists do and what you, as a musician, WANT to do. Maybe you do not want to learn jazz as a genre but just to play in the style of a certain jazz guitar player. This will cut your work load considerably as you can find tabs for the work of many jazz guitar players on the internet.
Do you want to learn to play the guitar? http://playaguitarforfree.com/ is my blog which shows you that there are many people like you who wish to learn how to play bass, acoustic or electric guitar. You will find guitar lessons, videos, articles and reviews to answer your questions, calm your fears and help you play the guitar.

Learn to Play Jazz Guitar
Learn to Play Jazz Guitar
One of the reasons that people devote their time to learning the guitar is that they love the idea of making up their own songs and music. Simply by sitting down at an inspired moment, a guitarist might come up with a great song in only one session. Some guitar styles differ greatly from another, but it is by learning the jazz guitar that many musicians have experienced the liberty it brings. The deviations in styles that somehow hold to one rhythm and work together in the name of improvisation are why jazz musicians are said to be filled with “soul”.
When training your ear or your mind to learn how the jazz guitar fits into an entire ensemble of musicians, it is important to first know how jazz music works, at the root level. Much like an athlete prepares for a race, a jazz musician also prepares for a performance. The jazz musician needs to warm up, have an introduction, and be allowed to have some time to get used to the atmosphere of a place and an audience. Some musicians, however, especially those who have played a long time together will jump right into a tune without warming up, giving listeners an awakening into what’s about to take place.
A jazz guitarist in a band may or may not lead the group through a melody. Many jazz performances may not have a singer, but instead a trumpet, or some other horn instrument will take this lead. If a horn isn’t present in the ensemble, then the guitar or piano might work to lead a session. Since jazz music is made up of a band, each person in the band has a certain role to fill before they begin their improvisational role. The jazz guitar tends to hold the players together within a certain chord so that other band members can stick to what’s being played. A jazz guitarist in this role, will not necessarily strum a rhythm such as in other forms of music, but will instead move rhythmically with the rest of the players involved.
In the game of jazz music, improvisation is key. If you know how to play another instrument, learning the jazz guitar might be a little easier. And, if you love improvising on the piano, for example, then you might love it on the guitar. “Improv” as it is sometimes referred to, is one way music can be highly addictive and liberating. When that liberation happens with a group who is playing together, the soul and reaction from the audience involved can be magical. Overall, learning to play the jazz guitar will be rewarding on many levels. Learning to play the necessary chords and knowing when and how to strum to the rhythm of others in the group takes time and practice. Give yourself plenty of time and dedicate yourself to listening to and learning how jazz music works and you’ll be on your way to playing along with a jazz group in no time.

Rock Guitar Lessons ? A Proven Way For You To Pursue This Dream
Rock Guitar Lessons ? A Proven Way For You To Pursue This Dream
Are you the person who has always wanted to learn rock guitar? Do you love listening to rock music on your I-pod, Walkman, or home surround-sound stereo system wishing that you could play like some of those musicians? 10 to 15 years ago, you were limited in learning how to play the guitar in this style. Now, one of the most popular and successful ways to learn to play is to take rock guitar lessons online.
The period beginning in the late 60’s through the mid 70’s is when several famous rock guitar musicians caused the popularity of the instrument to explode, worldwide. On Internet sites such as you-tube, videos have been legally posted in which you can see the classic playing styles of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jimmy Page. Unlike the other two, Jimi Hendrix became famous more for being a featured solo artist as opposed to his being a member of a prominent group. In songs such as “Watch Tower” and “Hey, Joe”, Hendrix’s brilliance can be seen through his virtuoso improvisation and dexterity on the guitar.
Eric Clapton became famous first in the mid 60’s group “Cream”. “Sunshine of Your Love” remains one of the most famous opening guitar riffs, played by Clapton, in rock history. I also personally like a song composed by Clapton when he became more of a solo artist in the early 80’s called “She’s Waiting”. In the middle of the song, Clapton improvises with a brilliant and emotional expansion on the opening theme.
Jimmy Page, the British rock guitarist was a member, first of the mid-60’s group called the “Yardbirds”. A few years later, Page along with Robert Plant as lead singer, John Paul Jones on bass guitar, and the late, great John Bonham on drums, formed the quartet known as “Led Zeppelin”. “Stairway to Heaven” is commonly known as the group’s most well-known recording. Many followers of “Zeppelin” believe, however, that the song “Dazed and Confused” was the group’s most brilliant work. With Jones providing a brilliant, repeating bass line on his guitar, Jimmy Page on lead guitar has a stunning solo improvisation in the middle of the song. Jimmy Page also broke new ground by using a bow string, (used for playing the violin, viola, cello, or string bass in an orchestra) to create the most amazing sounds on his lead guitar. If you have heard of this song, but not seen it performed on video; you would owe it to yourself to find it on the Internet just to watch the sheer brilliance of these rock musicians.
I hope in discussing these 3 great musicians, that I have heightened your interest in taking lessons. Interactive, online lessons for rock guitar have been proven to be an advantage; compared to what was available even 10 years ago. Back then, you would have been limited in getting the type of quality instruction allowing you to improve your playing skills on the instrument. Basically, you would have had to personally know an instructor who could teach you all of the technique in this style of playing. Even then, the mentor might not have been capable of clearly communicating his/her instructions in a manner making it easy for you to understand as he/she taught. In addition, a good quality teacher might have only been available in a music studio for several hours per day; and at a time which was really not the best for you.
Good quality online guitar programs would include video as well as audio/text tutorials; giving you a number of ways to learn songs in addition to the technique required allowing you to improve on the instrument. You should be able to download the teaching lessons right to your computer, or have the option of purchasing DVD’s monthly from the site. The ability to learn at your own pace and from the comfort of your home is another major advantage in learning how to play the instrument online.
If you are interested in taking rock guitar lessons, choosing to take online instruction now presents the best choice for you. Do your due diligence by first researching a program that offers exactly what you are seeking. Not all interactive, online programs are equal as far as the opportunities that they are able to offer to you. Some of the best programs however, could have you one day sounding like a Clapton, Hendrix, or Page! I have always been a life-long lover of music. I majored in music while in college. Learning how to play an instrument should be something that any person would want to pursue. Whether you have an interest in learning how to play the drums, guitar, trumpet, or cello; the instrument that you choose should be a representation of your inner self. Playing an instrument has been proven to medically lower stress in the body. Playing an instrument well would improve your self-esteem. It requires dedication, effort, and desire to really excel on any instrument. It is my hope to make you aware on the importance that music can be within your life. Every person should not let the opportunity pass by, as being able to play an instrument can prove itself rewarding throughout a lifetime.
Classic Game Room talks about the Rock Band 3 demo from E3 2010 and talks about what experienced musicians can expect with the new game from Harmoix. This is a look back at the MTV Games booth where 7 people played Rock Band 3 for a demonstration. They used a keyboard (keytaur!), two backup singers, lead vocal, drums, guitar and bass. The one guitarist played a REAL guitar with Rock Band 3 and was scored in the game on Rock Band 3 Pro mode (Rock Band 3 professional mode). The game will have some accessories that support MIDI so that you can use other guitars and keyboards. Available for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 PS3.
