Become a fan of our facebook page www.facebook.com “Lady D’Arbanville” is a song written and recorded by Cat Stevens, and released in April, 1970. He was already a successful songwriter, and this was his first single released upon signing a contract with Island Records, with the encouragement of his new producer, Paul Samwell-Smith, fostering a folk rock direction for the young composer. “Lady D’Arbanville” has a madrigal sound, and was written about Stevens’ former girlfriend, Patti D’Arbanville, metaphorically laying her to rest. “Lady D’Arbanville” was the first single released from Stevens’ third album, Mona Bone Jakon, which took off in a completely different direction from the songs of his previous two albums. Although Stevens’ debut album had charted, and while both albums he’d recorded had successful single releases in the British pop music charts, he chafed against the “Carnaby Street musical jangle” and “heavy handed orchestration” that his producer, Mike Hurst (of Deram Records) favoured. Just at the completion of his second album with Hurst, Stevens contracted tuberculosis and a collapsed lung, requiring hospitalisation and rest for a year. During this time, he spent his empty hours writing over 40 songs, and upon a clean bill of health successfully negotiated out of his Deram contract, and settled on Island Records …

Video Rating: 4 / 5This was a live recording of Dizzy and friends in Havana in 1985. “Night in Tunisia” was composed by Dizzy in 1942. In 1n 1985, Dizzy Gillespie returned to Cuba after an absence of 40 years. He was one of the first American jazz musicians to add Afro-Cuban elements to his music, and Cubans to his big band. Most notably, in the 40s, was percussionist, Chano Pozo. A then-young Arturo Sandoval (trumpet) and Gonzalo Rubalcaba (piano) sit in with Dizzy’s band. Bari sax player, Sayyd Abdul al-Khabbyr, is remarkable. Walter Davis is on in this number.Great fun!

Robert Palmer – Addicted To Love
Music video by Robert Palmer performing Addicted To Love. (C) 1985 The Island Def Jam Music Group

Joseph Fidler “Joe” Walsh (born November 20, 1947) is an American musician, songwriter, and actor. He has been a member of three commercially successful bands, the James Gang, Barnstorm, and the Eagles, and has experienced notable success as a solo artist and prolific session musician, especially with BB King. A native of Wichita, Kansas, Walsh and his family lived in Columbus, Ohio for a number of years, and subsequently moved to New York City. Later, Walsh moved to Montclair, New Jersey and attended Montclair High School there. He spent time in various bands playing around the Cleveland area, including The Measles, while attending Kent State University. In January 1968, he replaced Glen Schwartz as lead guitarist for the James Gang, an American power trio. Walsh proved to be the band’s star attraction, noted for his innovative rhythm playing and creative guitar riffs. In particular, he was known for hot-wiring the pickups on his electric guitars to create his trademark “attack” sound. The James Gang had several minor hits and became an early album-oriented rock staple for the next two years, including James Gang Live at Carnegie Hall. In November, 1971, Walsh left the group and formed the group Barnstorm, although their albums credited Walsh as a solo artist. Walsh and Barnstorm released their debut, the eponymous Barnstorm in 1972. The album was a critical success, but had only moderate sales. The follow-up The Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get (1973) was titled …

Video Rating: 4 / 5A celebrity is a widely-recognized or famous person who commands a high degree of public and media attention. The word stems from the Latin adjective celeber but they may not become a celebrity unless public and mass media interest is piqued. For example Virgin Director Richard Branson was famous as a CEO, but he did not become a global celebrity until he attempted to circumnavigate the globe in a hot air balloon. On the other hand, mass entertainment personalities such as soap opera actors or music stars are likely to become celebrities even if the person deliberately avoids media attention A small number of celebrities can be considered ‘global’, in that their fame has spread across the world, even across linguistic and cultural boundaries. These celebrities are often prominent political figures, actors, globally successful musicians and sports stars. The rise of international celebrities in acting and popular music is due in large part to the massive scope and scale of the media industries, enabling celebrities to be viewed more often and in more places. The reach of entertainment products is further extended by large-scale illegal copying of movies and music, which makes inexpensive pirated versions of DVDs and CDs available throughout even less economically developed countries.

KMFDM – A Drug Against War
KMFDM is a German industrial rock/metal band led by founding member Sascha Konietzko. They have sold over 2 million records worldwide. KMFDM was founded in Paris, France on February 29, 1984 as a joint effort between Konietzko and German painter/multi-media performer Udo Sturm to perform for the opening of an exhibition of young European artists at the Grand Palais. Sturm had no lasting musical aspirations, and Konietzko was more interested in studio recordings than the occasional art performance, so he began collaborating with then-Hamburg-based studio owner Raymond Watts and drummer Klaus Schandelmaier, who adopted the stage name En Esch. After working the Hamburg underground music scene and releasing three albums on European labels, the band began its long-standing relationship with Wax Trax! Records when their 1988 album Don’t Blow Your Top was licensed to the label for US distribution. After touring with Ministry in 19891990, they signed directly to Wax Trax! and quickly became a part of the industrial music scene in Chicago that included Ministry, Front 242 and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. Konietzko then moved to Chicago in early 1991, and Esch followed a year later. After close friend and president of Wax Trax! Records Jim Nash died of an illness complicated by AIDS, KMFDM relocated to Seattle, Washington. The current line-up of KMFDM consists of Sascha Konietzko (vocals), Lucia Cifarelli (vocals), Andy Selway (drums), Steve White (guitars), and Jules Hodgson …

Elgar: Violin Concerto, mvt 1 – Sammons/Wood (1st complete recording)

1. Allegro Thanks to Frank Martin for allowing me to use his excellent transfers. Original transfer by ACGriffith, massive amount of editing-time by Frank Martin. You can find this and many other wonderful selections and information at his website: musicparlourhistorical.blogspot.com Recorded 18 March / 10 April 1929 New Queen’s Hall Orchestra conducted by Sir Henry Wood Albert Sammons, 1886-1957 By Erik Eriksson from allmusic.com Although scarcely a celebrity outside the United Kingdom, Albert Sammons was regarded by many fellow musicians and critics as the finest violinist ever to have been produced by England. A bold, yet sensuous tone, phrasing that was both virile and freely rhapsodic, and keen musicality all met in a man whose intensity set ablaze many a solo score. In addition, Sammons was an excellent concertmaster for several prominent British orchestras, taking from the experience a mastery of ensemble and interplay. Although Yehudi Menuhin’s recording of the Elgar Violin Concerto with the work’s composer was a justly famous one, Sammons’ recording of the work from three years earlier was finer still. It was for Sammons that Frederick Delius wrote his violin concerto and Sammons premiered the work in 1919. His 1944 recording of that work, remastered and re-released by Naxos in a 2002 coupling with Elgar reveals his full dimension as an artist. Following a few basic lessons from his father and elder brother, Sammons studied briefly with two Ysaÿe students …

Driver’s Seat – Sniff’n The Tears 1978
Sniff ‘n’ the Tears is a British rock band perhaps best known for their 1978 song “Driver’s Seat”, a hit in many countries (including #15 on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart). The exception was the UK itself where a problem with EMI’s pressing plant meant that the single was not available following the band’s appearance on Top of the Pops and it peaked just outside the Top 40. Sniff ‘n’ The Tears are led by singer/songwriter Paul Roberts, the band’s sole constant member. Roberts, a noted painter, is also responsible for painting all of the band’s album covers. An early version of Sniff ‘n’ The Tears had been gigging in England as “Ashes of Moon” as early as 1973. They were unable to land a record deal, and the band’s singer/songwriter Paul Roberts decided to dissolve the group and move to France. A few years later, Ashes’ drummer Luigi Salvoni listened to some demos that Roberts had cut in about 1975. Hearing commercial potential in them, he contacted Roberts about reforming their musical partnership. Sniff ‘n’ The Tears subsequently debuted in 1977 as a six piece band, consisting of Paul Roberts (vocals, acoustic guitar), Loz Netto (guitars), Mick Dyche (guitars), Chris Birkin (bass), Alan Fealdman (keyboards), and Luigi Salvoni (drums & percussion). This line-up recorded the band’s first album, Fickle Heart, which was produced by Salvoni. Though recorded in 1978, the album sat unreleased for over a year until being picked up by Chiswick Records. The band then had a …
Video Rating: 4 / 5We exist despite the sober formality of great concert halls, despite the boredom of classical musicians’ life, despite fanatic lovers of classical music, despite fans of rock, rap or pop who are afraid of classical music. We treat our Muse with a humorous irony and we’re sure, she will have nothing against it!” The names that make the moz’ART Group are: Filip Jaslar – first violin; Micha? Sikorski – second violin; Pawe? Kowaluk – viola; Bolek B?aszczyk – cello. They are all well educated instrumentalists who graduated from prestigious Academies of Music in Warsaw and ?ódz, but they decided to play classical music in a humorous way. They created a worldwide unique musical cabaret, where the music, not the words are the source of joy and laugh. Take a classical composition as canvas, analyze its structure and theme, surround it with musical associations, brilliant, unbelievable ideas and while listening to the final product the listener is constantly surprised, amazed, laughing and moved to tears. The musicians of the Moz’ART GROUP have been playing together since 1995. At the beginning, they presented short musical jokes on Canal Plus Television. They gave their first debut in 1997 at the PAKA – competition of young Polish cabarets in Krakow. In the same year, they presented their first cabaret program entitled “Mozart’s Still Alive” and since then, they have given concerts in Poland, Japan, China, the United States, Belgium, France and Switzerland. The Moz’ART GROUP is a …
