  • The Soul of Ben Webster – His Emotional Tenor Saxophone

    Date: 2012.05.30 | Category: Musicians | Response: 48

Teddy Wilson, piano; Ben Webster, tenor saxophone. Look carefully after Teddy Wilson’s solo and you’ll see tears streaming down Ben’s cheek. Benjamin Francis Webster, 27 March 1909, Kansas City, Missouri, USA, d. 20 September 1973, Amsterdam, Netherlands. After studying violin and piano, and beginning his professional career on the latter instrument, Webster took up the tenor saxophone around 1930. He quickly became adept on this instrument; within a year he was playing with Bennie Moten and later worked with Andy Kirk and Fletcher Henderson. In the mid-30s he also played briefly with numerous bands mostly in and around New York, including spells with Duke Ellington. In 1940 he became a permanent member of the Ellington band, where he soon became one of its most popular and imitated soloists. Although he was with the band for only three years, he had enormous influence upon it, both through his presence, which galvanized his section-mates, and by his legacy. Thereafter, any new tenor saxophonist felt obliged to play like Webster until they were established enough to exert their own personalities. After leaving Ellington, he led a small group for club and record sessions and also played with several small groups led by artists such as Stuff Smith and Henry ‘Red’ Allen. In the late 40s he rejoined Ellington for a short stay, then played with Jazz At The Philharmonic. From the 50s and on throughout the rest of his life, he worked mostly as a single, touring extensively

This a beautiful song made by George Duke and Stanley Clarke. It belongs to the album CLARKE/DUKE 3 PROJECT recorded in 1990 (the album was released in Argentina in 1991) with many guest musicians and singers. The voice here is Gerald Alston’s. The song was originally composed by Stanley Clarke. A very sensitive interpretation. ‘Cause all men we need a woman by our side. Not behind. Not ahead. “Right By My Side”…

It looks like this task isn’t as easy as Summer Sanders and Bret Michaels thought despite it being a task to create a jingle where both teams have musicians who can be creative and original with it… But we’ll see which side will successfully create the better songs though

  • Blue Note Record’s Magnificent 7: Payton, Wilson, Coltrane, Charlap, Washington, Bernstein and Nash

    Date: 2012.05.22 | Category: Musicians | Response: 25

Blue Note Records is a jazz record label, established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis. Francis Wolff became involved shortly afterwards. It derives its name from the characteristic “blue notes” of jazz and the blues. At the end of the 1950s, and in the early 1960s, Blue Note headquarters were located in New York City, at 43 W 61st Street. The label is currently owned by the EMI Group and in 2006 was expanded to fill the role of an umbrella label group bringing together a wide variety of EMI-owned labels and imprints specializing in the growing market segment of music for adults. Historically, Blue Note has principally been associated with the “hard bop” style of jazz (mixing bebop with other forms of music including soul, blues, rhythm and blues and gospel). Horace Silver, Jimmy Smith, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Lou Donaldson, Donald Byrd and Grant Green were among the label’s leading artists, but almost all the important musicians in postwar jazz recorded for Blue Note on occasion, albeit most often only once. Blue Note 7 performing Thelonious Monk’s “Criss Cross,” includes interviews.

  • Carlos Santana – “Samba Pa Ti” (1970)

    Date: 2012.05.18 | Category: Musicians | Response: 49

Carlos Augusto Alves Santana (born July 20, 1947) is a Mexican rock guitarist. Santana became famous in the late 1960s and early 1970s with his band, Santana, which pioneered rock, salsa and jazz fusion. The band’s sound featured his melodic, blues-based guitar lines set against Latin rhythms featuring percussion instruments such as timbales and congas not generally heard in rock music. Santana continued to work in these forms over the following decades. He experienced a resurgence of popularity and critical acclaim in the late 1990s. Rolling Stone named Santana number 15 on their list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time in 2003. He has won 10 Grammy Awards and 3 Latin Grammy Awards. Santana was born in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico. His father was a mariachi violinist, and Carlos learned to play the violin at age five and the guitar at age eight. Young Carlos was heavily influenced by Ritchie Valens at a time when there were very few Latinos in American rock and pop music. The family moved from Autlán de Navarro to Tijuana, the border city between Mexico and California, and then San Francisco. Carlos stayed in Tijuana but joined his family in San Francisco later and graduated from James Lick Middle School and Mission High School there. He graduated from Mission High in 1965. Javier Bátiz, a famous guitarist from Tijuana Mexico, is said to have been Carlos’s guitar teacher who taught him to play a different style of guitar soloing. After learning Batiz’s
